Every number below comes from a named source listed at the bottom of this page. National figures are labeled as national; they are not Tampa quotes. Checked October 23, 2026.
Typical life by finish (national)
- National Plasterers Council: white plaster 5–8 years, quartz 10–15, pebble 12–18, polished finishes 8–12[14].
- Angi (national): plaster about 10 years, aggregate 20+ years; paint has to be reapplied every 2–7 years[13]. Angi's FAQ also says a well-applied plaster finish lasts 5–10 years on average, depending on water chemistry[13].
- Concrete pools: Angi says a concrete pool lasts 50+ years and needs resurfacing every 10–15 years[15].
Water chemistry is the big variable
- The NPC says "aggressive" water, with low calcium hardness, low pH or low alkalinity, etches and deteriorates the finish[16].
- It recommends testing pH, alkalinity and chlorine 1–2 times a week, and calcium hardness, cyanuric acid and total dissolved solids monthly; its ideal saturation index is 0.0 to +0.3[16].
How long each finish lasts
| Finish | Lifespan claims |
|---|---|
| White plaster / marcite | 7–12 years (Aqua Coat[1]); in a saltwater pool often 7–10 years, against 12–15 in a traditional chlorine pool (Pool Renovators[4]). |
| Quartz aggregate | 10–15 years (Aqua Coat[1]); 12–15 years in a saltwater pool (Pool Renovators[4]). |
| Pebble (Pebble Tec and similar) | 15–20 years with proper maintenance (Aqua Coat[1]); 15–25 years in a saltwater pool (Pool Renovators[4]). |
| Any finish | "Most Florida pools need resurfacing every 10 to 15 years" (Acqua Bella[5]). |
Salt air and saltwater pools
- Aqua Coat says Clearwater's "salt air and high humidity accelerate pool surface wear"[2], and that Tampa's high UV, heavy summer rain and year-round heat stress pool finishes. It says afternoon downpours dilute pool chemicals and add phosphates, which can lead to scaling, waterline staining and algae[1].
- Pool Renovators says the problem in saltwater pools is less the salt itself than the salt chlorine generator, which raises pH near the cell and along the walls and etches plaster over time. It recommends quartz or pebble over plain plaster for an active salt system[4].
- After resurfacing, both companies say to keep the salt cell off for the first four weeks (Aqua Coat says no heater, salt cell or automatic cleaner for 28 days) and to brush twice a day for the first two weeks[3][4]. Pool Renovators says to start the cell at 50% output or lower and ramp up over two weeks[4].
- Start-up chemistry targets they publish: pH 7.2–7.6 (Aqua Coat) or 7.4–7.6 (Pool Renovators), total alkalinity 80–120 ppm, calcium hardness 200–400 ppm[3][4]. Follow your contractor's written start-up instructions; they govern the warranty.
How long the job takes
Angi: 5–7 days for most resurfacing jobs, 1–2 days for paint, up to 14 with bad weather or a remote location[13].

Frequently asked questions
How long does pool plaster last?
The National Plasterers Council gives 5–8 years for traditional white plaster[14]; Angi says about 10 years, or 5–10 on average depending on water chemistry[13].
How often should a pool be resurfaced?
Angi says concrete pools need resurfacing every 10–15 years[15]. The NPC's typical surface life runs from 5–8 years for white plaster to 12–18 for pebble[14].
What makes a finish wear out early?
The NPC points to aggressive water (low calcium hardness, low pH or low alkalinity), which etches the surface[16].
